ABC staff have been warned a $14.6m budget cut will be implemented in the next financial year after the re-election of the Coalition.
The new managing director, David Anderson, told staff on Monday morning that a “budget challenge” was looming after his lobbying efforts in Canberra to reverse the cut fell on deaf ears.
The Labor party had promised to reverse the Coalition’s $83.7m “indexation pause” if elected and one of the ALP’s election promises was to give the ABC and the SBS an extra $60m between them.
Anderson has long indicated that more jobs were likely to go to “free up” as much money as possible for content.[…]
Wow! Thanks so much for sharing this film, Kris. What an amazing number of classic rigs. Hams back then needed some serious muscle to take their gear to the field!
As I’ve mentioned before, this coming weekend in the US of A is Memorial Day weekend. In addition to the true meaning behind Memorial Day itself, the weekend is the unofficial kick off to the Summer season.
My good friend Jim W4QO put this post on the new qrparci.io reflector. He has some good advice here:
I know many of you could care less about entering a contest but there are two in the next few days that you should consider. Go to: https://www.contestcalendar.com/weeklycont.php Notice that there does not seem to be much going on this week, but
1. WPX is Saturday and Sunday. This is a great contest for the QRPer as you work anybody anywhere. It is a CW contest and this is a chance to test our your equipment, if nothing more. Get on and look for someone calling CQ. I’ll tell you, by Sunday afternoon, they will be begging for your QRP signal. If your callsign is somewhat different (not a simple W or K like mine) that makes you even more valuable.
2. The QCX Challenge (http://www.qrp-labs.com/party.html). Please note that you do not need a QCX to operate in this one; heck, you do not even have to be QRP (yikes!). It is a bit different as it has 3 separate periods during the day on Monday. The first session is 9 to 10 AM Monday morning in the east US. If nothing else, let’s honor Hans who gave a very nice talk at FDIM by getting on in
record numbers!
Jim W4QO
This Sunday in Central NJ is looking to be partly sunny/cloudy with a high of 87F (31C). A nice day to either get out to one of the local shady parks; or perhaps just operate from the backyard patio. I got the table and chairs cleaned last weekend and got the umbrella up. It makes for a nice operating position with quick access to a lot of ice cold water in the fridge!
Keep in mind - we are currently about two weeks away from the 75th Anniversary of Operation Overlord - D Day. I’m sure there will be plenty of Special Event stations on the air to commemorate the history of that very significant day. As I find them, I’ll try to post them here. Here are two from the ARRL listings:
06/01/2019 | W2W D-Day Commemoration
Jun 1-Jun 9, 1300Z-2200Z, W2W, Baltimore, MD.
The Amateur Radio Club of the National Electronics Museum (K3NEM). 14.244 14.044 7.244 7.044; 80 meters (3.544, 3.844) and digital modes possible.. Certificate & QSL. W2W D-Day, P.O. Box 1693, MS 4015, Baltimore, MD 21203.
Amateur Radio Club of the National Electronics Museum (ARCNEM) will operate W2W in commemoration of the anniversary of D-Day and the role of electronics in WWII. Primary operation will be June 1-June 2 with additional operation possible during the June 3-9 period, as operator availability permits. Frequencies +/- according to QRM. QSL and Certificate available via SASE; details at ww-2.us
Old Dominion Chapter 202 QCWA. 3880 KHz AM, LSB 3585 KHz CW 7285 KHz AM, LSB 14.245 MHz USB. QSL. WW2DDM c/o H. A. Boaz, Jr., 1389 Budd Lane, Montvale, VA 24122.
Bedford, VA is the location of The National D-Day Memorial. Bedford was the home of the “Bedford Boys”. These were the nineteen young men from Bedford that died that day and four others died during the rest of the Normandy campaign. The town of Bedford had proportionately suffered the greatest losses that day. That is why the US Congress established the D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA.

A short-wave radio station is a radio communication device that operates at a wavelength of 100 to 10 meters (frequency of 3 to 30 MHz). Mainly used for transmitting voice, equal amplitude and frequency shifting . Amplitude modulation and single sideband modulation are employed when transmitting telephone signals. It consists of a transmitter, a receiver, an antenna, a power supply, and a terminal device. Generally divided into portable, vehicle-mounted and fixed stations. It has the characteristics of small size, light weight, etc ., usually adopts a whip antenna, and uses ground waves for short-range communication, and the power is usually several watts to several tens of watts.
HF is a software radio (SDR) short-wave (HF) low-power (QRP) transceiver that has been popular all over the world since its introduction and has at least 30,000 users. Its advantages are: small and portable, cost-effective , full-featured, direct-production software radio line models. For electronic enthusiasts who love DIY and hardware, this is a very good training glove that can be used to familiarize with the working principle of amateur radio transceivers. It can also be used by software enthusiasts who write code programming and code farming. Almost all contest logging software supports the capability to periodically post a user’s current score data to an online scoreboard throughout a contest. By configuring your software to send score data to the Score Distributor, instead of directly to one of the online scoreboards, you ensure that your score is represented on all scoreboards, not just the one you choose to follow. Select the Instructions tab above to learn how to configure your logging software.
Background
Contesting has traditionally been a very lonely sport. You sit in your shack, make QSOs, and then find out how you did at the end. That requires a lot of self-motivation to keep going, particularly when conditions are poor. By watching an online scoreboard while operating, it gives an idea of how you’re doing compared to others.
You don’t have to be in contention for a top-ten score to benefit from watching a scoreboard during a contest. Contesters with very simple stations have been motivated by seeing how they’re doing against another club member or buddy with a similar station
______________________________________________________________________ ContestOnlineScore.com is establishing a special award program to encourage the use of scoreboards during international contests. We are currently announcing three plaques that will be available for participants in the CQ WPX CW Contest May 25-26, 2019:
– Highest Online Scoreboard (Single operator Low Power) – Highest Online Scoreboard (Single operator High Power) – Highest Online Scoreboard (Multi-operator)
Single operator includes assisted or non-assisted entries.
Multi-operator category includes M/S, M/2 and M/M entries.
There is one requirement for all contenders, They are required to actively contribute their scores to Contest Online Scoreboard sent directly or forwarded over Score Distribution Server during all periods of their contest activity.
The plaques winners will be awarded after official results are published by the contest organizers. Any disqualified entries will not be eligible.
We are looking for plaques sponsors. Your name will be on the plaque!

Dave Bernstein reported this on the DXLabs support group today: —————————————————————– ADIF 3.1.0 was approved today:
ADIF 3.1.0 specifies that the representation for FT4 is an ADIF record is
<MODE:4>MFSK <SUBMODE:3>FT4
This is the representation used in the current version of DXKeeper (14.9.2) when exporting an ADIF record. When importing an ADIF record, DXKeeper interprets both
<MODE:4>MFSK <SUBMODE:3>FT4
and
<MODE:3>FT4
to mean “QSO mode is FT4”.
As the software sages say, “Be precise when exporting, but tolerant when importing”.

Ampleon has released the first of a family of RF power devices based upon its Advanced Rugged Technology (ART) derivative of the proven 9th generation high voltage LDMOS process technology. The process has been developed to enable the implementation of extremely rugged transistors with operating voltages of up to 65V.
The first product to use the process, the ART2K0FE, is a 2KW transistor with a frequency response of 0 to 650MHz, offered in an air-cavity ceramic package. It is designed to withstand the harshest conditions often found in industrial, scientific and medical applications, in roles including driving high-power CO2 lasers, plasma generators, and some MRI systems. The ART devices are suitable for use in these applications because they can handle very high voltage standing-wave ratio (VSWR) mismatches of 65:1 at 65V, which CO2 lasers and plasma generators can exhibit in operation.
Devices built on the ART process have high impedances to make them easier to integrate into products during the development phase, and to ensure greater product consistency in mass production. The process also enables devices to be built that have greater efficiency than competing LDMOS offerings. This reduces the operating costs of end applications by wasting less of the input electrical energy as heat. It also allows the devices to have greater power density, which means they can be offered in smaller and lower-cost packages, which in turn reduces their board footprint and so cuts systemic costs.
The ART devices also have a high breakdown voltage, which helps ensure that they will work consistently and reliably throughout their intended lifespan. Ampleon is also guaranteeing that the devices will be available for 15 years, to enable product designers to plan for the long term.
The ART2K0FE in an air cavity ceramic package is now sampling with reference circuits available at different frequencies. Ampleon also offers a lower thermal resistance over-moulded plastic version, the ART2K0PE. Production for both variants is expected in the second half of 2019.

Southgate ARC - Not a bad week at all. Still the Spanish AM70 stations are dominating things. I’m up to 65 th in the UK, still needing AM70L and AM70P on ten metres (on FT8 of course). A couple of weeks to go yet. Just got my Gold certificate, some way to go for the Platinum!
We are returning to the beautiful island of Saint Martin in December 2019. Our primary focus will be on the low bands – 40, 80, 160, primarily using CW and FT8 to maximize the number of contacts. We will pay special attention to Asia as the window is very small. There will be activity on […]
Southgate ARC - The contact will be a telebridge between OR4ISS and IK1SLD, located in northern Italy. The contact will be audible in Europe on 145.800 MHz. Moreover, the event will be web streamed by the telebridge station
Southgate ARC - Around the Arctic Circle, VHF radio signals are starting to echo from Earth’s upper atmosphere–a phenomenon called ‘Polar Mesospheric Summer Echoes.’

Rather, he said, the failures flow from a “broken culture” at MartÃ, which has relied on Cuban dissidents as on-air personalities and on a small group of anti-communist organizations as sources for some content.
“I know it’s tempting to make an assumption about the Trump administration, particularly given the terms that have been used about the press, but I can tell you unequivocally that there has been no influence by the Trump administration,” said Lansing, a holdover from the Obama administration. Rather, he said, the report reveals “a lack of basic journalist standards across the board.”[…]
