Southgate ARC - SDR Sample Rates: How fast is fast enough? - If you measure the voltage at the base of an antenna and record the readings, you end up with a collection of numbers that represent the voltage over time. These numbers, or samples, can be used to represent the antenna signal inside a computer

Today’s blog is a repost from August, 2015.
I see that the ARRL has filed three more formal complaints to the FCC concerning the bone-crushing HF emissions being produced by off-the-shelf grow light ballasts. The complaint also includes detailed lab data collected on all three devices and it is not pretty. One wonders why it is necessary at all that the ARRL be the industry watchdog instead of the FCC … why aren’t they being more diligent in filtering out these products before they hit the market? If importers and dealers are simply bypassing regulations for the sake of a quick-buck, then heavy fines must be imposed until someone ‘gets the message’.
Some of the test products were ordered and purchased through Amazon and through Sears … the ARRL’s thorough report makes it obvious that rules are being ignored and amateurs are paying the price.
“The level of conducted emissions from [these devices] is so high that, as a practical matter, one RF ballast operated in a residential environment would create preclusive interference to Amateur radio HF communications throughout entire neighborhoods,” ARRL General Counsel Chris Imlay, W3KD, wrote in each complaint. The devices exceeded conducted emission limits under all test conditions, “sometimes by extreme margins, throughout most of the HF range …”
In a similar vein as its recent complaint about marketing of certain RF lighting devices by The Home Depot, the ARRL pointed out that there were no FCC labels on two of the devices mentioned nor any FCC compliance information “anywhere in the documentation, or in or on the box, or on the device itself,” in violation of FCC Part 18 rules.
The League asked the FCC to require removal of all such illegal “grow light” devices from retail sale and marketing and the recall of those devices already sold or available for retail sale, and it said the device importers should be subject to a forfeiture proceeding.
With the proliferation of both legal and illegal 'hydroponic’ operations, this kind of QRN is probably just the tip of the iceberg. It’s good to see the ARRL slowly pounding away at the rule-breakers on behalf of American amateurs.
I see these same devices being sold on E-Bay, where presumably, they could be purchased worldwide and installed anywhere. As well, several of the U.S. online dealers state “ We ship to Canada” … just great.
Hopefully Industry Canada and RAC are gearing-up for the fight.

Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Tracy Wood, who notes:
New construction – a 250 kw FEBC medium wave outlet coming southwest of Seoul. BTW, FEBC currently leases at least one hour of VOA-Korean on FEBC 1188 khz Seoul.
An interview with the FEBC president on CBN News:
(Source: CBN News CBN News)
Communist North Korea is about to get hit with a massive new radio signal carrying the message of Christ’s love like never before.
“It’s an AM station, 250,000 watts, which will clearly cover North Korea,” said Ed Cannon, president of Far East Broadcasting Company, also known as FEBC.
For over 75 years, FEBC has been using radio signals to send the message of Jesus Christ around the world.
Cannon says this new “super station” will be erected close to the border of North and South Korea.
“We’ve secured a location on the western coast of South Korea just a few miles south of the Demilitarized Zone,” Cannon told CBN News. “It’s a perfect location because the signal goes across the ocean for a few miles and then goes right into North Korea.”
FEBC’s president says the radio signal will launch in a few months and will carry gospel programs produced from neighboring South Korea.
“The strategy of our organization is to use indigenous people in their native language to produce programming,” Cannon said. “We have a large segment of South Korean people broadcasting and we also have a number of escapees, refugees from North Korea, who’ve come to our organization.”
Cannon claims the signal will be “unblockable” by North Korea’s regime and will “reach far past the northern boundary of North Korea covering the entire country with the message of Jesus Christ.”
According to its website, FEBC’s broadcasts can be heard in 107 languages and 49 countries from 149 stations and transmitters.
“Our goal in North Korea is the same as it is in all of our other countries: to share the gospel through radio so that people will be inspired to follow Jesus Christ as their Savior,” Cannon told CBN News in an earlier interview.
North Korea is the most dangerous country in the world for Christians. Cannon says anyone caught listening to FEBC programs faces severe consequences.
“The {North Korean} refugees themselves say ‘pray for courage, pray for perseverance’ because the Christians are reaching out in ways to gather together in the Name of Christ, to pray together, to listen to the radio together, and they are willing to endure severe persecution,” Cannon told CBN News.
Each year, Open Doors USA releases their World Watch List, a ranking of the 50 countries where Christians face the most persecution.
North Korea has taken the top spot for 18 years in a row.
“If Christians are discovered, not only are they deported to labor camps as political criminals or even killed on the spot, their families will share their fate as well,” Open Doors asserted on their website. “Christians do not even have the slightest space in society, on the contrary, they are publicly warned against.”
Thank you for sharing this, Tracy!

A High Power 50 Watt GMRS Mobile Radio from BTECH is Released
BTECH announced today the North American release of the BTECH GMRS-50X1. The GMRS-50X1 follows in similar footsteps and abilities found in our handheld GMRS radio the BTECH GMRS-V1.
There was a huge void for users in that, an affordable fully functional GMRS mobile radio has never been available. BTECH took the initiative to engineer that very radio with feedback from the GMRS community. Our mission was to have the simplest GMRS mobile radio that can easily be used on all GMRS mobile radio channels, while being able to add features not seen on any GMRS radio before! With our team of engineers and designers, along with our BETA users throughout the GMRS community – we were able to accomplish it AND we are able to provide it all while costing less than any other high powered GMRS mobile radio!
More than just a GMRS Mobile Radio
The GMRS-50X1 is a 50 Watt GMRS mobile radio compatible with all brands of FRS and GMRS radios. It is also compatible with GMRS repeaters. Channels are wideband and narrowband compatible. The GMRS-50X1 is also a VHF and UHF scanning receiver capable of adding additional channels for receive only (such as NOAA weather and other channels of interest).
Three Power Levels: Depending on the channel used; you can select from High (50W), Mid (20W), and Low (5W) power settings.
The GMRS-50X1 is compatible with all CTCSS (PL Tone) and DCS (DPL Tones) privacy tones from any other brand of walkie talkies. You can easily scan and select the tone needed to transmit and filter to hear only the conversations you want to hear!
Another innovation, borrowed from our X-Series line, is using ‘Quad Watch’: The GMRS-50X1 operates as multiple radios in one, with a channel selected as the primary channel; while simultaneously watching up to 3 other frequencies or channels. You can simplify the radio to only watch one or two channels as well. The GMRS-50X1 includes dual sync display which allows for displaying both a channel’s name and frequency simultaneously.
We understand the importance of being able to program the radios on the fly. The BTECH mobile radios allow full programmability from tones, bandwidth, settings, and the channel name all without a PC. If you want to go in-depth modifying the radio – PC programmability is still available, allowing advanced tone setting modifications and easy scanner channel imports using CHIRP.
The GMRS-50X1 it also has a standard mono 3.5mm audio out jack to allow easy use with your favorite audio environment.
Channel List Overview
GMRS channels are setup in the standardized FRS/GMRS flow. Channels 1-22 are non-repeater channels coordinating with the GMRS channel list and channels 23-30 are GMRS repeater channels.
Channel List:
* Per FCC GMRS Radio Guidelines; Channels 1-7 are limited to Low Power – 5watt output
**Per FCC GMRS Mobile Radio Guidelines Channels 8-14 transmitting is disabled; they can receive and monitor communications, but GMRS mobile radios cannot transmit on these channels.
Pricing and Availability
The GMRS-50X1 is available today. Pricing starts at $179. You can order direct from Amazon or BTECH at: baofengtech.com/gmrs-50×1

Encore – Classical Music this weekend is being broadcast as usual by Channel 292 (Europe) on 6070 kHz at 15:00 UTC Sunday 12th May.
And by WBCQ on 7490 kHz at 00:00 – 01:00 UTC Monday 13th May.
There is a repeat on 6070 kHz on Friday 17th May at 19:00 UTC.
This week’s show starts with the Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet, then we have a saxophone concerto, a piece by Louiis Moreau Gottschalk, an intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, and an extraordinary example of 1930’s film score. There is also some Debussy and Gounod.
In a programme first – every piece played this week has been request by a listener.
There is another first too – I have added a short field recording. It was made on the banks of a burn (what streams are called in Scotland) high up in the hills a couple of weeks ago.
As usual – reception reports and requests for music to play in future programmes will be very welcome.
Regular Broadcast times are:

“Hamvention is just over a week away. Do you have your shopping list ready? How about those comfortable walking shoes? It’s time to get everything in order to attend the biggest and best amateur radio event of the year! We at Hamvention have another exciting announcement. If you are curious about a topic and would like to get some info before you leave for the show, or you aren’t going to be able to make it and want to hear what’s going on, we have another wa y for you to talk to us prior to the show.
We are going to have a HF “Talk-In” net next Monday and Tuesday evenings. We will be there to answer questions and give out general information pertaining to the show. Our plan is to have two time slots of approximately 2 hours each on both nights. We will be on the air on 7.215 MHz at 1800-2000 EDT (2300-0100 GMT) and on 3.875 MHz at 2200-0000 EDT (0300-0500 GMT) each night. Our operating frequencies will be plus or minus QRM.
For those operators that work W8BI during this event, we will be sending out a special “Hamvention 2019 HF Talk-In Net” QSL card! This will be a unique card for those of you that collect them.
Take advantage of the opportunity to “get the scoop” early, get your questions answered before you head out, and stake your claim on a very limited edition QSL card. Whatever the reason, we look forward to talking to you on the air.
