Category 4 Cyclonic Storm Fani was the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the Indian state of Odisha since Phailin in 2013.
Many thanks to SWLing Post contributor, Ashok Shankar Das, who shares the following post from his blog SWLDAS:
The extremely severe cyclonic storm #Fani recently visited Odisha. It is Peculiar to have a Cyclone in this time of year. Though history says earlier there are some cyclones hit Odisha coast during this summer season.
[…]I have seen several Cyclones including #1999SuperCyclone . Though Super cyclone has done a lot of damage, this one is no less. Wind speed of 200kmph with gust 220 to 250 kmph ripped everything in its path. major damages to infrastructures like power grids, cell towers under construction buildings are name a few.
My Preparedness
The CountyComm GP5-SSB
See this SWLING article–I was runner-up in that challenge. My preparation for Cyclone Fani was as per I have described. Well Not all. I have charged emergency light, arranged candles and lantern. Stocked Biscuits and Flat rice. Stored around 15Liters of drinking water. Emergency medicines and fully Charged 3 Baofeng Walkie Talkies.
The GP5SSB I got as a gift from SWLING Post, put new battery in it. I have downed external antennae for HF and VHF. Baofeng handys are quite good as scanner. I monitored HAM band so I could know the situation in surrounding area and also if situation arises I could give a distress call to Nearby monitoring person. But that situation didn’t arise.
HAM volunteers from WBRC started their communication service since 5th May. They Have setup a VHF in state control room at Bhubaneswar, ADM office Puri and Khurda.
Since 5th may onward I was monitoring and in QSO with VU2IPL(Suresh). VU2FTP VU2XRY VU3YDA and VU3OXI are handling the communication between Puri, Khurda and Bhubaneswar.[…]
Thank you for sharing this, Ashok and we’re very pleased that you made it through this extremely dangerous storm well-prepared. It sounds like your community has a good ham radio communications network at the ready as well.
Ashok, you are reminding me that it’s time to dream up another Virtual Radio Challenge along with an enticing prize. I’ll start putting one together! Perhaps I can find a prize at the Hamvention this week. Stay tuned…

FTM-400XDR C4FM FDMA / FM 144/430 MHz DUAL BAND TRANSCEIVER
The new FTM-400XDR includes an improved GPS receiver that employs the latest in GPS technology providing faster and more accurate satellite searching functionality. These advancements will reduce GPS Time-to-First- Fix (TTF) thereby speeding up navigation and telemetry functions. The FTM-400XDR replaces the previous model, the FTM-400DR.
The FTM-400XDR is the first mobile introduced to be a fully compatable radio partner for use on the YAESU System Fusion Dual Mode system. Compared to other digital modulation schemes within FDMA, C4FM has excellent communication quality (BER: Bit Error Rate characteristics). C4FM is the standard method for professional communication devices in FDMA, and is therefore considered to be the main stream digital communication mode in the future. Download our “Digital Communications Guide for Amateur Radio Operators” available on our web site that explains more about this efficient and reliable digital mode.
The FTM-400XDR operates in three (3) Digital modes and an (1) Analog mode to suit your needs. This feature packed radio is our first Digital Mobile equipped with our new Automatic Mode Select (AMS) function that instantly detects the received signal mode. The AMS function enables stress-free operation and eliminates the need to manually switch between communication modes.
V/D Mode (Voice/Data simultaneous communication mode)
The digital voice signal is transmitted in one half of the band width. Simultaneously the other half of the 12.5 kHz band width channel is used for error correction of the voice signal and other data. By incorporating powerful error correction technology developed for professional communication devices, effective error correction codes provide the advantage of fewer interruptions to conversations. The Clear Voice technology developed for the C4FM FDMA Digital mode provides the ideal balance of error correction and sound quality.
Voice FR mode (Voice Full Rate Mode)
This mode uses the full 12.5 kHz bandwidth to transmit digital voice data. The increased amount of voice data permits high quality voice communication, providing superb sound quality for a “rag chew” with friends.
Data FR mode (High Speed Data Communication Mode)
This high-speed data communication mode uses the full 12.5 kHz bandwidth for data communication. The transceiver automatically switches to Data FR mode when transmitting snapshot pictures, and can be used to transmit large quantities of data at high speed.
Analog FM mode
Analog FM is effective when weak signal strength causes audio drop out in the digital mode, and enables communication up to the borderline of the noise level. Also the use of established Yaesu low power circuit designs provides greater efficiency than the digital modes. This is the typical FM mode used by most typical non-digital handhelds and VHF/UHF mobiles.

Saw this on Facebook this morning under “Amateur Radio Funnies”, and there is something to this that does bring on a chuckle.
I think many of us have been in a DXpedition pileup, or a pileup for a super rare one when someone starts to try to rag chew with the prized contact in question. And there have been times when I have had this impatient sentiment, too - but it also got me thinking.
Maybe it’s due to growing older and perhaps gaining a little wisdom? - but sometimes I get tired of the competition and the quickie “UR 599 TU QRZ?” QSOs. It’s nice, from time to time to have an honest-to-goodness relaxing rag chew with a DX station (or ANY station for that matter). After all, isn’t that part of what Amateur Radio is all about? Making friendships, overcoming boundaries?
Making DX Honor Roll is a remarkable, honorable and laudable achievement and I have the utmost admiration and respect for those who have done so. But I never want to become jaded like that one Ham who sold all his equipment after receiving his Honor Roll plaque, because he thought “I did it all” and there was nothing else to be gained by remaining in the hobby.
I may not get on the air as often as I should, I will never make Honor Roll (I know that, for a fact), and I will probably pass one day with a bunch of unfinished projects taking up space in my shack, but I do enjoy the comforting thought that Amateur Radio is there in the background of my busy life, and will continue to be a source of enjoyment for me in the future.

As the regular readers know, this site is not purely and entirely shortwave radio-centric … we enjoy all radio.
I don’t think we’ve mentioned this web site before, but I recently ran across this article on RadioINK:
People are no longer dependent on radio.
That’s what St. Louis Public Radio contends with the launch of its new podcast, The Gateway, another short (7-15 minutes), daily news podcast. Here’s what they had to say about the new show …
Being a radio buff – or shall I say an ALL radio buff – I cannot fully comprehend that “people are no longer dependent on radio”. But I do acknowledge that technology has allowed us to manage our time better. And having a local podcast of news does appeal to many (yes, I suppose even to me at times).
It’s a very short article – three paragraphs – but I challenge the readers to comment: are you no longer dependent on radio? Okay – that’s a loaded question to this audience – just look at this post within the past 24-hours! But we’d also like to know: is there anything in your area, like this article describes of St. Louis Public Radio, where your local stations are turning to podcasts or other means to reach and/or expand their target audience?
Thanks in advance for your comments.
