I currently have the rubber ducky attacked and it just gets terrible reception. I’m wondering if either of these two annennta would really help boost my reception?
Edited: So Is there any difference between these two antenna?

Squelch issues AFTER programming UV-5R with chirp
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 10:28 PM PST
I know the baofengs have issues with sensitive squelch, and I’m also aware of the settings in chirp to alter the ranges of the squelch for the radio. No matter how much I adjust these settings I constantly get the cutting in and out problem that can only be solved by setting squelch all the way to 0. I have tested the exact same radios next to each other, one that has been programmed and one that had not. The un-programmed radio always performs better.
So, shy of going through the painstaking process of manually programming several stations into the baofeng radio, does anyone have any advice, or even experienced the same issue?

TIL: Any previous callsign holder can reclaim their call, not just the most recent callsign holder
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 08:08 PM PST
So I’ve been debating about whether to return to a previous 2×1 I hadand discovered that a previous owner prior to me has reclaimed it. That’s OK by me, makes my decision that much easier. But I was a bit surprised to learn that any previous callsign holder can reclaim it within the 2-year window before it becomes available again.
Actually, this is the rule (according to AE7Q):
A: FCC Former primary station holder Former primary station holder (“By checking this box, I certify that the call sign being requested was assigned to my station within the past 2 years and that I can provide documentation, if requested.”) This is the vanity request type to use when requestiing a callsign that you have previously held, and you have documentation to prove it.
The previous owner gave up the call well prior to 2 years ago, so I guess the request wasn’t legit after all. But I’m not going to complain about it, just a heads’ up for anyone sitting on the fence about returning to a previous call.

Am I Too Young for HAM Radio?
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 06:18 PM PST
After getting my license and being on the air for several months, I’ve come to the conclusion that I just spent a lot of time and money to have, what amounts to, awkward and meaningless conversations with strangers. No, not every QSO is bad, and I’ve had some great conversations, but the bulk of them fall into one of three categories: Listening to a local weather report from a place I didn’t even know existed and care absolutely nothing about, learning about someone’s medical complaints and conditions, or being read an inventory of someone’s radio gear, usually in model numbers that mean absolutely nothing to me.
I’m not a bad person, but I just can’t even pretend to care about any of this stuff. I had hoped to meet and speak with interesting people about interesting things. Most of the people I meet on the air are considerably older than I am. Knew this going in my dad and grandfather were botth Hams. But man I just feel like I’m in the day room at a nursing home when I turn my radio on.
Are there nets and reflectors where people discuss things other than ham-tech related topics? Like, well, anything? I don’t even care what it’s about. Auto racing, crocheting, mink farming. Just anything?

CYPRUS QSL MATTERS > Baz, 5B4AHO has retired as QSL manager for the Pafos
Raddio Club, after 10 years of stirling work. The new QSL manager is Norman,
5B4AIE. QSLs for the following calls should be sent via 5B4AIE: 5B4PRC,
C4EURO, C4EU, P3EU, P3R and 5B70VE.
QSLing 5B stations in general: a reminder that many Cyprus stations have a
QSL Manager who is not resident in Cyprus. It is therefore pointless to send
QSLs for these stations to the Cyprus QSL Bureau the cards will almost
certainlyy not be delivered to their intended recipient. A full list of these
stations can be found here: http://bit.ly/1QdZQht [TNX 5B4AHJ, CARS QSL

HV ON CLUB LOG > The logs for HV0A (QSOs aafter 2 February 2008), HV4NAC
(QSOs after 26 January 2008), HV50VR and HV6SP are now available on Club
Log. They will be updated soon after each activation. The logs are regularly
uploaded to LoTW. [TNX IK0PRG]
IOTA SURVEY > If you p; need IOTA groups OC-196, OC-198 and/or OC-228,
there is a quick survey to help Craig, VK5CE plan operations there in 2017:
http://ift.tt/2gqG1La.
YOTA MONTH > The Youngsters On The Air group will be acttive again during
the entire month of December. The idea for this event is to show the amateur
radio hobby to youth and to encourage youngsters to be active on the ham
radio waves. Participating stations include 3V8YOTA, 4O1YOTA, 4O2YOTA,
7X2YOTA, 9A0YOTA, 9A16YOTA, A2YOTA, A60YOTA, DA0YOTA, E71YOTA, ES9YOTA,
ET3AA/YOTA, GB16YOTA, HA6YOTA, HB9YOTA, II2YOTA, II5YOTA, J62YOTA, LX4YOTA,

SH9YOTA, TM0YOTA, YO0YOTA, YT16YOTA and ZS9YOTA. QSLs via Club Log’s OQRS.

Texas Balloon Launch Tomorrow
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 04:13 PM PST
The Baylor Amateur Radio club has been working with Josh Ward, a Baylor Staff member and balloon enthusiast, to develop a payload for a balloon launch. The payload includes 4 go pro cameras, a cross band repeater, APRS tracking and a plethora of environmental sensors. It is our goal to reach 90,000 feet which would provide great coverage for the repeater. The launch is tentatively scheduled for tomorrow (November 26) at around 10am central from Comanche Texas. The exact time of the launch will depend on the local conditions and cloud cover and could be anywhere between 10am and 12n . The predicted track of the balloon has it going over the south side of with a predicted burst near Hwy 6 east of the loop. Those interested in live updates can subscribe to the remind.com system by going to http://ift.tt/2fNxyyb

3Y0Z BOUVET ISLAND DXPEDITION UPDATE. The following update was posted
under : A Message From the
DXpedition Team Our Commitment to You A DXpedition to BouBouvet is not
to be taken lightly. Bouvet is a serious and dangerous place; demanding
attention to safety, serious planning, physical and mental endurance, time
to allow for storms and rough seas, and a team with the right balance of
size, experience, talent, emotional stability, and sense of purpose. We
feel we have met these criteria, but when we arrive at Bouvet we also need
to attend to our obligations to you, our financial supporters and DX audi-
ence. How we meet those obligations and expectations will define us as a
team.
It is our belief that, given the rarity of this entity, we must pull out
all the stops. We must utilize maximum legal power, the best antennas,
world class transceivers, propagation studies, the best location on the
island, a safe vessel and crew, highly qualified helicopter pilots, and
the complimentary resources of our team. We will need near real time infor-
mation flowing to us through our extensive pilot system so that we can
maximize our primary purpose providing QSO’s.
&nnbsp; We have a conscience. We will not do this just for the sake of doing it
and end up using a compromised location, less than 24/7 coverage of all
open bands, limited power, inefficient antennas, and insufficient time at
the island. We want to do this right and give everyone the best possible
chance of making the QSO’s they desire, be they on 160, the WARC bands,
SSB, CW, RTTY, or 6 and 2 meter EME.
Rest assured that we will do our very best for you! No shortcuts or
compromises! …… The 3Y0Z Bouvet Island DXpedition Team
4L, GEORGIA. Operator Vaho, 4L8A, will be active during the CQWW DX CW
Contests (November 26-27th) as a Single-Op/Single-Band (20m) entry. QSL

5H, TANZANIA. Mike, 5H3EE, from Dar es Salaam will be active during the
CQWW DX CW Contest (November 26-27th) as a Single-Op/All-Band/Low-Power
entry. In the past suggested frequencies were 14069, 21069 and 28069 kHz.
QSL via DL4ME. Mike states, “Fast and safe is to request QSLs online via
our Online QSL Request System (OQRS). Please do not send QSL cards via
bureau or emails with QSO data anymore! Use the Online QSL Request System!
This will create a much less work load for us. We do not answer QSL cards,
that come in via the bureau!”
8R, GUYANA. Heye, DJ9RR, is now active as 8R1/AG6UT from Guyana. His
length of stay is not known. Activity will be on 40-10 meters, and he

him to be on the air after the contest. QSL via DJ9RR.
9XB954, RWANDA. Harald, DF2WO, will be active from Kigali, Rwanda, with
the very unusual callsign, 9XB954, sometime during February/March 2017.

various HF bands. QSL via M0OXO’s OQRS. Look for more details to be forth-

several Omani amateurs in the CQWW DX CW Contest (November 26-27th) as
a Multi-2 entry from the new A47RS club station using the special contest

mentioned are Toshinobu/JI3ERV (NH2C) and Mikawa/JR7OMD. QSL via LoTW or
to JH7QXJ, direct or by the Bureau. PLEASE DO NOT QSL via the KH2 Bureau.

OF9, FINLAND (Press Release OH2BH From Officces of Santa Claus in
Finland, dated November 19th). DECEMBER’S ULTIMATE EVENT OF9X PROMOTES
THE CHRISTMAS SPIRRIT ON THE RADIO SPECTRUM Greetings from the Land of
Sannta Claus, in the Far North at the Arctic Circle.
The busy yuletide season is soon upon us, and Santa is preparing his
sleigh for another world tour. The old man is very busy, but fortunately
the elves are there to help him deliver the Christmas spirit to the world’s
children.
The Ou-Hou (OH) people are also bringing Santa to the ham community as
in many past years, utilizing some high tech to assist him. With the help
of multimedia and the Internet, a dozen or so elves will operate Santa
Radio, OF9X, with their own identity.
As a reward for contacting several of them, your brave children, grand-
children, or neighbors’ children may even speak with Santa himself. Amateur
Radio’s future resides in our youth, and Santa can be their first contact
with the art. This year’s activity will also pay respect to the ARRL’s late
President Emeritus, Jim Hayne, W5JBP, who became a SK at the time the Santa
script was in making. We wish to carry on the spirit of his mission the
Big Project in this format.
The certified reindeer driver and Laplander Pertti “Pete” Koivula,
OH2BEE/OH9U, will give Santa a face and voice, tapping into his pro-
fessional background as a famous actor of the Helsinki City Theatre.
Pete is well known from his role in the Finnish national movie “The
Unknown Soldier,” exploring those difficult bygone times of war, still
remembered by seasoned Finns.
The Santa activity’s end will mark the beginning of Finland’s Anniversary
as a 100-year-old sovereign and independent nation.
The patron of the OF9X Santa Activity is Mr. Juha Sipilä, the Prime
Minister of the Republic of Finland. Mr. Sipilä indicates his sincere
support of Finland being the home of Santa and states that “using the
latest technology to promote Santa is valuable support for Finland and
helps make this Christmas a special one.” He further expresses his pleasure
of “welcoming an increasing number of visitors, such as those from America
and China, who come to explore the treasures of Finnish Lapland by flying
directly to Santa Claus Airport at the Arctic Circle.”
More details will be released soon. The OF9X (Old-Father-9-Christmas)
activity is supported by the Finnish Telecommunications Regulatory Authority
(FICORA) and the Finnish Amateur Radio Association (SRAL), and is organized
by Radio Club of Pusula, OH9W with Radio Arcala, OH8X of Oulu, the frozen
North.

REALTIME BAND CONDITIONS WEB SITE :
The purpose of this experimental Web site is to provide 24-7-365 actual
(REALTIME) band condition information to CW QRPp, QRPe and CW/SSB for
Contesters interested in increasing their scores. It can also be of
benefit to other Radio Amateurs to determine band conditions for Nets
and casual QSO’s. This information is NOT based on any software pre-
dictions or any kind of satellite based readings. It is based on a
new Ionospheric sounding method called “HF Ionospheric Interferometry”
which operates very similarly to the PolSAR system used by NASA.

Should amateur radio be used for military purposes?
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 02:08 PM PST
About a month ago, it was reported that amateur radio operators in India had been drafted to monitor the radio communications of suspected terrorist using the ham bands. The report in The Arunachal Times notes:
Suspicious signals in coded Bengali and Urdu languages along the India-Bangladesh border in past few months have raised suspicion over extremists using this unconventional mode of communication, prompting authorities to deploy Ham radio operators on round-the-clock duty.
The incident first came into light in June after amateur Ham radio operators picked suspicious radio signals and unauthorised radio communications in coded Bengali and Urdu in Basirhat and Sunderbans region.
Alarmed over the incident, the operators informed the Centre following which they were called to an international monitoring centre (Radio) and asked to track the signals.
A team of 23 Ham radio operators are now on round-the- clock duty trying to track the exact location of radio signals.
This story was also reported in India’s Press Trust of India News and FirstPost.
While I’m all for ham radio being used for emergency and public service communications, I’m not so sure that I agree with this particular use. I would be OK with this if the amateur radio operators in question were actually drafted into the military and used military equipment to monitor these transmissions, but I’m not sure that as amateur radio operators they should be taking part in these kinds of operations.
What do you think? If you lived down near the U.S.-Mexican border or the U.S.-Canadian border, and the Border Patrol or Army asked you to listen for potential terrorist communications, would you do so?

Better PCR1000 Software
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 02:08 PM PST
Hi All,
I’ve got an ICOM IC PCR-1000, but I’m not a fan of the software it comes with. Does anyone have any tips on better software I can use, preferably with a waterfall display?

Hey, does anybody remember how long it took to get their vanity? I submitted my application online almost 3 weeks ago and I don’t think they’ve even looked at it yet. I think I received my systematic after about 10 days when I got licensed.

SWR Meter
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 12:08 PM PST
So, my dad and I are just getting into Ham radio and my dad has started to play around with making antennas etc and wants a meter.
We’re just techs and will likely be just that for awhile.
I’d like to get a decent meter, for at least 70cm/2m but he’s been playing with 6 & 10m too.
Any suggestions, I’d like to keep it under $200, under $150 if possible.

Weekly CW Noob On-Air Hangout Saturday 02:30 UTC
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 10:05 AM PST
This is for anyone interested in trying out CW. Any and all are welcome, whether you can just barely send your callsign or guys running 60+WPM while making a sandwich. The idea is to make a nice safe place for Redditors (or others!) to hop on the air and try and make some QSOs using morse. New operators can call at whatever speed they are comfortable copying at, experienced operators please just try and work the new guys.
Frequency coordination will occur in IRC. We hang out in #redditnet on irc.geekshed.net (web client available in the yellow box on the right). This doesn’t act as a traditional net, but rather we move around between frequencies and bands as needed to give everyone a shot. Just pop into the channel and say “anyone want a CW QSO?” or something similar.
Please remember to answer any calling station at the speed they call at.
On the flip side, don’t call any faster than you can copy
Expect a lot of busted contacts from failing to copy, and lots of people calling ‘AGN?’
Seriously, you should probably at least be able to send your callsign for legal ID purposes
Use a key, bug, paddle, foil wrapped banana, whatever. You’re probably cheating yourself if you let the computer do all of the sending and receiving though, this isn’t a contest or a DXpedition. Feel free to use it for help if needed though. We don’t care.
Try and do things farnsworth style if you have trouble sending. Faster characters, longer spaces between. Decrease the spaces if both operators can handle it.
Don’t hesitate to call QRS if you need the guy on the other side of the ionosphere to slow down.
Check out the wiki for resources on learning CW. It doesn’t take a whole lot of time all at once, 5-15 minutes 2-3 times a day, every day.
If you’re member of SKCC (free!), FISTS (costs, but cheap), or any other group, you can try and send your numbers as well for the contacts to count towards their awards, and feel free to QSL to try and get the Reddit awards (see wiki).
If there are specific bands you’d like to try and work, give a yell here and we can work with you. Technicians are welcome and encouraged to exercise their CW privileges on the lower bands.
Good luck and see you on the air

Bye bye FCC. The damage has begun.
Posted: 25 Nov 2016 08:06 AM PST
I have a friend who is an rf engineer. A good part of his day is spent chasing down rfi cheap grow lights on display at Home Depot/Walmart that interfere with the pagers doctors use for example.
He is in one of the districts where the FCC has closed their field offices, sold the trucks and are leaving town. He was told that if there was a major problem then they will send in a jump team, but for the most part they are on their own and good luck.
From this point forward, expect no assistance from the FCC except in very limited capacity and in very limited areas.

When disaster calls Waupaca County ARES answers
A small group of radio amateurs in Waupaca County help maintain communications during emergencies
On Waupaca Now Robert Cloud writes:
“When all other forms of communications go down, you can communicate around the world if you have a 12-volt battery,” according to Jesse Landre W9JLL, the public information officer for the Waupaca County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES).
“We’re there to back up the systems that have gone down,” Landre said. Nearly 20 volunteers are active with ARES countywide.
They work with Waupaca County Emergency Management, provide local storm spotting and warnings during severe weather, and safety monitoring at the Iola Bump and Jump in May, the Iola Car Show in July and the Waupaca Triathlon in August each year.
Every June, Waupaca County ARES also participates in Field Day, an emergency preparedness exercise involving more than 30,000 ham radio operators nationwide.
