Radio suggestions

I do a fair amount of driving and in different vehicles because of work. I’d like to find a unit that would let me broadcast a fair distance but also be portable. I’m looking to just get into ham radio (just starting to read manuals,no licence yet). I also drive my own vehicle 4.5 hours home so at that point I wouldn’t mind having a bigger antenna on that.
