I’m just getting started with amateur radio (general license) and am not really interested in building my own stuff. I just want to get a nice portable radio to make contacts with and listen in on others – near and far. I have some extra money to spend, and I heard good things about the ICOM ID-51a plus and D-STAR. After watching some videos it seems pretty easy to connect to repeaters all over. What are your thoughts on this radio and D-STAR in general? I have a Baofeng UV82 but the range on it doesn’t seem that amazing and I’d really love to reach out all over the world.
