What would the MINIMUM equipment be for me to receive 4000/5000kHz frequencies?

I’m looking to receive a frequency around 4000/5000mHz but realistically want to spend as little money as possible. Would this be possible with a modified home radio, or would I need a small “HAM” radio – so to speak
