ELI5: CW, keys, keyers

You have learned/learning CW and it is time to get a key. What kind of key? Straight, one lever, two levers, a bug?!? (what’s that?), touch? Can one just plug it right into the the “KEY” jack and go or do you also need a keyer? Does any keyer work with a rig even it is has a keyer built in?

I thought a thread with some explanation might be helpful. There is a bit more to learn about the CW mode than just the code.
