Interested in getting into satellite ops

I’ll be out of state for a few months travelling, which means no expensive HF operations.

In doing some searching around, I’ve developed an itch to get into working satellites. I downloaded the heavens-above app and have been able to track satellites overhead. I’ve got a dual band Yaesu FT-60R handheld with an aftermarket whip antenna, which won’t get me talking to any birds.

I’ve seen some talk about the arrow handheld satellite antenna, but I’m a little apprehensive about the price and my lack of knowledge on the topic. Since I’ll be on the move, I’m not going to be able to DIY any antennas.

Does anyone have any experience with working satellites? Any recommendations for an antenna such as the arrow handheld? Are satellites a waste of time? Any advice is appreciated.
