Tony Dixon G4CJC
Another poor week with Wednesday only just into double figures for reported contacts. Still it did pick up a little bit at the weekend. Once again the special calls from Brazil for the World Cup were very popular with W1AW still going strongly every day of the week.
Thanks to Tony, YO3IPR, for pointing out the error (mine) in misreading S01WS as SO1WS. In my listings it actually was a zero not an O, I just didn’t notice.
He says, “S01WS (zero not letter O) is Western Sahara's national club station. They have been active many weekday evenings in the last month (Europe time), but running simplex makes for a big mess with so many calling and some people giving fake "59" reports to persistent callers! We really need them to work split. You can see the cluster spots here: DXfuncluster.
From here in Romania, the European summer sporadic E season started on 10m around 11th May and for 4 weeks there was little other than short skip around Europe with the usual openings to South America in the evening but weak with a lot of QSB. On Saturday 7th June the short skip was accompanied by good openings to the Caribbean J6/G0VJG (St Lucia) and Africa D3AA (Angola). Sunday 8th June saw good signals from ZS3Y in South Africa and on Monday 9 June ZD7FT from St.Helena was loud around 11 UTC, and FH8PL (Mayotte) and FR4NT (Reunion) were good around 14:30 UTC so it seems that with solar activity increasing again after the recent steep drop the long haul paths are opening again even with the presence of the E-layer.
TM70DD, TM70JUN, TM70UTAH were active 7-9 June for the 70th Anniversary of D-Day from the Normandy beaches in France. Others: SN777EL (Poland, 777 years of the city of Elblag) YL2014L, YL2014W (Latvia, for Riga European City of Culture 2014), ZA/ON4CCV (Albania DX-pedition). Also, as per your report, a proliferation of ZX14 & ZY14 calls for the football world cup in Brazil. This is what I could hear, I worked some, but not all :)”
Thanks Tony for that most excellent report. Incidentally a search on DXsummit for SO1WS (O not zero) reveals about 50 stations reporting it.

Also Stewart, G0LGS, pointed out my error. “S01WS (S zero one WS) is Western Sahara Club Station not Poland (SO). Thanks to you also Stewart, still “zero one” is an unusual use of number characters in a call.

Nazmi, 9W2GSG, started with this report, “Hello Tony, you missed station from West Malaysia right? 10m band condition not too good...maybe not too many DX stations on 10m band..I think.73! jumpa lagi..”
Then a short while later he sent in this for Tuesday ZS6BUU 59, RZ6M/P 59, UR5VCQ 59, I1AQY 59, UR5UCS 59, DG8OP/M 55, UR3CTB 59, IU4CHE 59, IK1QLJ 59, IC8POF 59, RY7G 59, IW9GSH 59, IT9STG 59, DL6NBR 59, RU6AV 59, ON7HLU 59, OE8HIK 59, IZ0NRG 59, LZ2VR 55, EA1LJ 59, RA3GKT 59, F6BIA 59, RW7T 59, EA8FM 59, IK0SOR 59, IK3JBP 59, IZ5ASZ 59, EB1DJ 59, SV1OCN 59, YU7AB 59, YU7BC 59, UA6HDE 59, UR5VBO 59, IN3EIS 59, EA4KD 59, PA0DOM . “This report for you after I sent my first report...band conditions very good this evening” 73!!
Arie, 9W2VVH, a regular contributor here says,
“Hi Tony. Apa khabar? Semoga sihat dan ceria selalu. A couple of weeks lately, band conditions are bad... no contact so no report! I think that's why no news from Malaysian stations. As for me, last week I only worked DR800BI (opr Tom DK3EE) special callsign - Bielefeld town celebrates its 800th birthday. Special QSL and Bielefeld 800 years award to catch! Here is the DR800BI Diploma
.”

Thanks for the greeting Arie, we are well and happy now that we have a young puppy. I trust you too are well.
I worked a couple of German stations on PSK31 and SC2014ECC on SSB.This is a special call for celebrating the town of UmeƄ as European Capital of Culture 2014.
So not too much really, but I haven’t been trying.

Sun: Just 5 sunspot clusters and with no sunspots strongly flaring, solar activity is low. However, sunspot AR2089 could break the quiet.

England had a low key start in the World Cup (meaning they lost). It’s make or break against Uruguay (who also lost) on Thursday.
Stoke City kick off the new season against Aston Villa on August 16th.
Plenty of cricket left yet. England just failed to beat Sri Lanka in the first Test (real cricket) so it was a draw.. It’s interesting trying to explain the difference between a draw and a tie to someone in Test cricket. It’s something you don’t get in lots of other games. Don’t get on LBW or Off Side in soccer.
