Satellite woes

I made a post a few days ago about getting into satellite ops.

Since then, I purchased the arrow satellite antenna, and it is currently being shipped.

In the meantime, I’ve tried to use my 17″ whip antenna on my handheld to hear amateur satellites- to no avail. I’ve only managed to barely hear the faint beeping of NOAA weather satellites. Every other amateur satellite I’ve attempted to pick up has yielded nothing but static. I’m guessing this is due to the NOAA satellites being larger and having a higher power outputs? Will I have better luck hearing and talking to amateur satellites once the antenna arrives? Any help is much appreciated.
