Sun: 4 sunspot clusters with just one possibly giving off flares.
The European Space Agency's Rosetta probe has reached 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko and is manoeuvring to go into orbit around the comet's core. This is an historic event. After Rosetta goes into orbit, it will follow the comet around the sun, observing its activity from point-blank range for more than a year. Moreover, in November, Rosetta will drop a lander onto the comet's strange surface. Today's events are being streamed liveby the ESA.

The 2014 Perseid meteor shower will peak between August 10 and August 13. A waning Gibbous Moon (the Moon's phase after a full moon) may make it harder for observers to see the shower. Despite this, astronomers suggest that observers try their luck to catch some Perseids before dawn on August 11, 12 and 13.

Stoke play Real Betis in a pre-season friendly today.
